5 Easy Ways to Improve Your Texas Holdem Game

You can achieve improvement in Texas Holdem poker through a variety of methods. There is so much to learn to do well in the game of poker and the more methods of improvement you find, the better your chances are of coming out on top. Success in Texas hold’em may end at the poker table, but it doesn’t usually start there. One key method for improvement is the use of supplementary materials. Here are five types of supplementary materials you can use to augment your Texas hold’em skills.

1. Poker Books

There are many great books on Texas hold’em and some not so great ones. David Sklansky has written a number of books on both poker in general and Texas hold’em, including "Theory of Poker," "Hold’em Poker" and "Hold’em Poker for Advanced Players." These books contain detailed groupings of hands, hand analysis and important ideas about the mathematics of poker. For tournaments, books by Dan Harrington, T.J. Cloutier and Tom McEvoy are indispensable, and of course, there is the famous Super/System by Doyle Brunson.

2. Poker Magazines

Magazines like CardPlayer often provide very enlightening articles on the game of Texas hold’em. Experienced poker professionals write these articles, be they tournament champions, online aces or even cardroom managers and can give you tips you can instantly implement to improve your hold’em game.

3. Poker Tracking Software

Online poker software such as PokerTracker allows you to keep detailed statistics on your game. By adding a software analysis program to your online interface or by inputting hand histories later, you can get the information you need on things like how often you see the flop, how often you win pots at a showdown and the average pot size of the hands you play. You can use this information to identify and plug leaks in your game.

4. Poker Playing Software

Software programs like Wilson Turbo Texas Hold’em can give you good practice playing online Texas holdem without costing you even money. There are even video game platforms that have poker programs. These programs actually have an advantage over free poker games online because virtual money is real to the virtual players so they will always play their hardest, whereas real players playing for virtual money will rarely play as well as they would if real money were on the line.

5. Poker Boot Camp

Players like Annie Duke and Phil Hellmuth often host poker "boot camps" where you can attend poker lectures from professionals and play in tournaments with poker stars. This way of improving isn’t cheap, but getting information about your game directly from pros can boost your results fast.
